A very big thank you to the Shin family for their generous donation of 30 pairs of shoes to the home! They and their friends donated the shoes in celebration of their daughter's 6th birthday. In lieu of presents, Senna requested that her family and friends donate so that every kid at Korea Kids could have a new pair of shoes! The shoes arrived all of the way from the US earlier this week and the kids couldn't wait to try them on.

For pictures of their generous donation (as well as o...

Our newest volunteers, Ryan and Alex, have been with us for about a month now and the children love them! Ryan, a Fulbright volunteer working at a high school, is on his second year here in Korea but is new to Deajeon. The kids love the funny faces he pulls and we all look forward to his outrageous voices. Alex is an EPIK teacher at an elementary school, brand new to Korea and making the most of it by volunteering with Heather, Ryan, and I at Korea Kids. The kids enjoy hearing him pron...

Hello and a warm welcome to Marissa, who started volunteering today.  Marissa observed our volunteering session this week, where Jason finished reading Where the Wild Things Are, and liked what she saw.  We're excited to announce that Marissa has decided she'd like to keep coming, and maybe even encourage a few friends to join in!

Marissa found us through this site on a tip from our mutual friend Ashley Stoffers, a volunteer from last year.  Small world!

Welcome to our new volunteer Jason!

Jason's new to Daejeon, and he knew he wanted to get involved with volunteering in his new hometown.  He contacted us through this site and asked about volunteering with us, and we're thrilled that our schedules and goals seem to have aligned.  We're excited to have him on board, and we can't wait to put the new team of 3 into action next week!

Today, we shared one of our favorite childhood books - Where the Wild Things Are.

We bought the book using funds from our KKOOM grant.  We read the first half today and will finish the book next time we see the kids.  Some of the vocabulary that we learned today was:

Thanks so much to our volunteer JJ's dad, Allen, who donated over 40 secondhand children's books to the Daejeon Salvation Army Children's Home.  JJ came back from a brief trip to the states with a suitcase filled with books for the kids, and we can't wait to start reading with them this week!  First up will be a favorite of ours from childhood:  Babar!

Thanks to our guest stars over the last month, Rachael, Louisa, and my lovely parents Joel and Kim.  The kids were so curious about you, and happy to have you there.  Thanks for helping with reading and playing all the games they like so much!

English Children's Books

We've just received a $100 grant from our friends at KKOOM, the Korean Kids & Orphanage Outreach Mission, to buy English-language children's picture books for our kids at the Home.  We are so, so excited, because each week we read an English book with the kids, but English-language children's books are more expensive and more difficult to find here.  We're grateful to KKOOM for the grant, and we're already looking through What...

A big thanks to Elena L., an EPIK teacher in Daejeon, who decided to teach her elementary school students about helping others and suporting their community with a lesson that included a clothing and school supplies drive.

Elena asked students to bring new and gently worn clothing and supplies to class.  Then she and her students sorted through everything, boxed it up, and donated them to the orphanage.

We'll bring the clothes and goods to the kids n...
